E-ZPass in the future?

Right now, e-z pass is 915 MHz, but from what I understand, they’re planning on eventually changing it over to a nationwide 5.9 GHz system. I’m not that knowledgeable in those systems. Does anyone have some info about that whole scene, maybe some links even? And… would it be possible to develop a GPIO connected attachment that can work with the 5.9GHz system, or does it require larger, more substantial equipment?

Theoretically it should be possible, but in practice this requires a lot of research, as e-z pass might use some proprietary communication protocol that is hard to implement

it seems to utilize tdma for the communications
i have one with me, but don’t have a way to reverse engineer the protocol.

I’d assume the MnPASS is the same. Minnesota had their own system, but recently implemented E-ZPass. Their old transponders still work too though. I have one of their sticker ones, though it’s not currently stuck on anything (I just hold it up when I go under the scanners on the highway).
